US - United States egg production totalled 7.83 billion during March 2011, down slightly from last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in their monthly Chickens and Eggs report for April 2011.

March egg production down slightly

United States egg production totalled 7.83 billion during March 2011, down slightly from last year. Production included 6.75 billion table eggs and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.01 billion were broiler-type and 73 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during March 2011 averaged 340 million, down one per cent from last year. March egg production per 100 layers was 2,302 eggs, up slightly from March 2010.

All layers in the United States on 1 April 2011 totalled 342 million, down slightly from last year. The 342 million layers consisted of 284 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 54.5 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs and 2.93 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs.

Rate of lay per day on 1 April 2011, averaged 74.5 eggs per 100 layers, down slightly from 1 April 2010.

Egg-type chicks hatched down two per cent

Egg-type chicks hatched during March 2011 totalled 44.0 million, down two per cent from March 2010. Eggs in incubators totalled 40.8 million on 1 April 2011, down five per cent from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totalled 275,000 during March 2011, up six per cent from March 2010.

Broiler-type chicks hatched up one per cent

Broiler-type chicks hatched during March 2011 totalled 794 million, up one per cent from March 2010. Eggs in incubators totalled 650 million on 1 April 2011, up one per cent from a year earlier.

Leading breeders placed 6.73 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during March 2011, up one per cent from March 2010.
