Salmonella Scare Resumes: More Eggs Withdrawn27 April 2011
CYPRUS - Eggs from another farm were withdrawn from sale last week, after they were found to be contaminated with Salmonella.
More eggs have been found with salmonella, this time at the Andreas Vasiliou farm in Kato Drys in Larnaca, the Veterinary Services announced on 19 April, reports Cyprus Mail.
According to the Services, the specific batch – labelled 1 CY4433.39 – was spotted during routine checks on the district's poultry farms.
Consumers are being warned to dispose of eggs with the specific batch number, and with a sell-by date of 16 May 2011.
Retailers have also been ordered not to sell the product to the public.
It was clarified that the Veterinary and Health Services were working in conjunction with the farmer in question, to ensure all infected eggs are recalled from the market.
In the previous two weeks, 100,000 eggs and 8,000 chickens were destroyed when salmonella was found on the faeces of the chickens at an unnamed farm. Authorities came under fire at the time for not naming the farm. It was not immediately clear whether the new incidence is connected with the earlier one, according to Cyprus Mail.
