Slovenia Increases Livestock Slaughter

SLOVENIA - In March 2011, 14 per cent more poultry were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses than in February 2011.

In comparison with the previous month, in March 2011, the slaughter of pigs increased by almost 32 per cent, of cattle by about 19 per cent and of poultry by about 14 per cent.

In the same comparison, the weight of dressed carcasses was higher for all types of animals slaughtered. The total weight of dressed carcasses of pigs slaughtered in March 2011 increased by almost 32 per cent, of poultry by about 26 per cent and of cattle by almost 20 per cent.

Compared to March 2010, in March 2011 the slaughter of poultry decreased by about 10 per cent, of cattle by about nine per cent and of pigs by almost three per cent.

Compared to March 2010, the total weight of dressed carcasses of cattle slaughtered in March 2011 decreased by about eight per cent, of pigs by almost eight per cent and of poultry by about six per cent.

In March 2011, 234 imported cattle were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses (36 per cent more than in the previous month); their total dressed carcass weight was 20 tons or about 32 per cent more than in the previous month. The animals – calves – were imported from Hungary.

In March 2011, the same as in the previous month, no imported pigs were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses.
