The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ghent University has launched an interactive web site, ABcheck, which is aimed to offer farmers, veterinarians and other stakeholders the ability to monitor antibiotic use on farms and compare with colleagues. The site also offers extensive background on the use of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in animals.
On this web site, you can quickly and easily calculate the antibiotic use on your farm through a scientific method. It is even possible to compare your score with other farmers.
Use of the web site is free of charge, unconditional and confidential.
The web site is currently available for the calculation of antibiotic use on pig, poultry and turkey farms. The modules for ruminants is under construction and is expected soon.
In addition, the web site offers extensive background information on antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance and the calculation method used.
Furthermore, free literature from studies involving antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance is available as well as links to web sites where you can easily find information regarding the antibiotics and their dosages used in Belgium.
The web site also offers advice on biosecurity in pig farms and simple adjustments to improve animal health and production on your farm.
If you wish to calculate your antibiotic use for a longer period, you can choose to save the input data. In that case, it is necessary to register after completing the calculation program.
The web application and the calculation method were developed by Professor Jeroen Dewulf, Dr Davy Persoons and Dr Merel Postma, with technical support from Steven Bruneel. The development was financially supported by the Boerenbond and Certus.
ABcheck is currently available in English and Dutch, and a French version is under development.
