RTC Weight Down Two Per Cent from Last Year

US - The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports a two per cent decrease in poultry ready-to-cook (RTC) weights in its monthly Poultry Slaughter report for July 2011.

Poultry certified wholesome during July 2011 (ready-to-cook weight) totalled 3.51 billion pounds, down two per cent from the amount certified in July 2010. The June 2011 revised certified total at 3.86 billion pounds, was up five per cent from June 2010. The June revision represented an increase of 1.47 million pounds from last month's preliminary pounds certified.

The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during July 2011 was 4.66 billion pounds, down two per cent from 4.75 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totalled 4.01 billion pounds, down two per cent from July 2010. Mature chickens, at 72.9 million pounds, were up two per cent from the previous year. Turkey inspections totalled 563 million pounds, down three per cent from a year ago. Ducks totalled 11.9 million pounds, down nine per cent from last year.

Young chickens slaughtered during July 2011 averaged 5.76 pounds per bird, up three per cent from July 2010. The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.00 pounds per bird, up two per cent from a year ago. Turkeys slaughtered during July 2011 averaged 29.1 pounds per bird, up two per cent from July 2010.

Ante-mortem condemnations during July 2011 totalled 11.3 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.24 per cent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.30 per cent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 32.8 million pounds, were 0.93 per cent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.91 per cent a year earlier.

July 2010 contained 22 weekdays (including one holiday) and July 2011 contained 21 weekdays (including one holiday). Both months had five Saturdays.
