Further Outbreak of High-Path Bird Flu Reported

WEST BENGAL, INDIA - A new outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been reported in a rural backyard poultry in a West Bengali village.

The veterinary authority sent Follow Up Report No. 1 dated 19 September to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes one new outbreak of HPAI at Tehatta-1 in Nadia in West Bengal. The outbreak started on 14 September in what is described as a village flock of 65,401 birds, of which 2,285 showed symptoms and 849 died.

The source of infection is unknown.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the HPAI virus has been confirmed.

According to the report, the epidemiological investigation is ongoing. Stamping out of all domestic poultry is being applied within an approximately 3-km radius zone around the outbreak followed by compensation to the owners.

An intensive surveillance campaign has been launched in a 10-km-radius zone including:

  • closure of poultry markets and prohibition on sale and transportation of poultry products in the infected zone, and
  • disinfection of premises after culling and sealing of premises where appropriate.

Restocking will be applied in accordance with a specified protocol.
