The free-range brand farmed by Kelly Turkeys, of Danbury, Essex, was one of 12 whole roasted turkeys competing in the Best Traditional category at the UnderGlobe, London.

The judging panel, which included a magazine food writer, consultant chef and three consumers, deemed the KellyBronze to be 'a glorious looking bird with an almost earthy, gamey flavour and the most delicious leg meat'.

The award was presented to Derek Kelly and his son Paul by former England footballer Ray Clemence and Lorna Cousins, chair of the British Turkey Federation's marketing committee, in front of 220 guests.

The evening raised more than £9000 for the children's medical charity Sparks and Dravet Syndrome UK.

This is the eighth successive year that the KellyBronze has won an award - the others were twice for crowns and once as a demi-bird.
