The Sub-Saharan Africa Region is ranked number 4 among regions of the world for United States (US) broiler and turkey meat exports and number 11 for egg and product exports when comparing 2011 January-September cumulative totals.

Since 2001 estimated total broiler meat production has increased 52 per cent and total domestic consumption has increased 107 per cent when compared to 2011 estimates. Because domestic production has not kept up with the increase in domestic consumption, total broiler meat import estimates have increased 321 per cent for 2011 when compared to 2001 estimates.

Sub-Saharan total turkey meat production estimates for 2011 have doubled since 2001. Meanwhile, the total 2011 turkey meat consumption estimate has increased 95 per cent since 2001. The increase in turkey production for the region has not been able to keep up with turkey consumption resulting in total estimated turkey imports for 2011 93 per cent higher than 2001’s estimates.

US Exports

US January-September cumulative broiler meat exports for 2011 meanwhile have increased 24 per cent since 2010 and 460 per cent since 2001 to Sub-Saharan Africa. Total US January-September cumulative total broiler meat exports for the world for 2011 are up 6 per cent over 2010 and 23 per cent higher than 2001.

Turkey meat January-September cumulative exports to Sub-Saharan Africa for 2011 are 56 per cent higher than 2010 and 131 per cent higher than the same time frame in 2001. In comparison, total US January-September cumulative turkey meat exports to the world increased 23 per cent since 2010 and are 38 per cent higher than 2001.
