More Ostriches H5N2-Positive in Western Cape

SOUTH AFRICA - The South African veterinary authorities have reported finding ostriches at four more farms in Western Cape Province with evidence of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus infection.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 9 on 5 December. Ostriches at four commercial farms were positive for H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus during October 2011.

According to the report, all tests proved HI positive, and no PCR positives were discovered. A total of 2,931 birds were involved, out of which 490 cases were identified. No deaths were recorded and no birds were destroyed.

The source of the outbreaks remain inconclusive. The OIE reports that initially, no clinical signs or mortalities were seen.

Stamping out of ostriches on positive farms is currently taking place.
