January Poultry Meat Production Higher Than a Year Ago

UK - Total poultry meat production in the UK during January 2012 was 157,000 tonnes, up 11.2 per cent from January 2011.

The UK's broiler chick placings were 4 per cent higher than January 2011 at 87 million birds.

UK turkey placings were 3.9 per cent higher than January 2011 at 1.3 million birds, according to the latest UK Poultry and Poultrymeat Statistics published by Defra.

Broiler slaughterings in January 2012 stood at 80 million birds, up by 5.4 per cent compared to a year ago.

The figures for turkey slaughterings stood at 2 million birds, 24 per cent higher than the previous year.

Peter Bradnock, Chief Executive of the British Poultry Council, said: "This steady increase is further evidence that the UK poultry industry is feeding the nation, and the economy. We are delighted that poultry continues to grow as Britain’s number one dish."
