Further investigations are underway to confirm the strain of the virus.

Yesterday (18 March), all of the 42,700 turkeys were culled. The government also placed a ban on the transport of poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding within a three kilometre radius of the infected farm.

Within this zone there are 25 other poultry farms, all of which are being examined for signs of the virus.

Under law, commercial producers are obliged to keep all poultry indoors, to prevent an outbreak. The Ministry of Agriculture also advises small, hobby farmers to do the same to protect their flocks.

The Ministry has also placed a temporary ban on the transportation of pigs and ruminants. Full results are expected within 10 days.
