The results also showed that 85 per cent of the families interviewed consider chicken a to be a healthy choice of meat and about 58 per cent of these families consume chicken at least two to three times a week.

The survey was conducted between November 2011 and February this year, with families of the main cities in all five Brazilian regions. The interviewees were between 18 and 65 years of age, representing all social classes (A through E) and varying degrees of education.

Of the respondents, 47 per cent eat chicken cuts, 20 per cent prefer whole chicken and 33 per cent buy whole chicken on both cuts.

The thigh and drumstick are the products most consumed by the families of the South, Southeast and Midwest, and also in classes A and B, while the preference in the North and Northeast, is the whole chicken, the same occurring in classes C, D and E .

Consumers with college degrees prefer the finest cuts such as fillet of chicken (56 per cent). But 51 per cent of respondents who had completed the third grade reported consuming thighs and drumstick.

The shelf life and appearance of the product, both with 38 per cent, were the main decision criteria mentioned by respondents at the time of purchase, in case of cuts of chicken, compared to 35 per cent of the price.

According to UBABEF, the survey also reveals that there is still room to increase consumption in Brazil, given the wide acceptance and good image of the product. Of the respondents, 79 per cent see it as a cheaper animal protein, 74 per cent consider it an ideal food, 66 per cent showed low-fat, 54 per cent cited it as more practical to prepare, in relation to meat red, and another 42 per cent say that chicken is an abundant source of vitamins.

73 per cent of households said they had not / do not know what suggestions to provide for improvement of whole chicken, which indicates its acceptance by the market. And only 5 per cent mentioned hormones, suggesting a reduction or elimination of a substance that actually is not used in poultry in Brazil. In the case of chicken cuts this suggestion was not even mentioned. And most (52 per cent) want more variety.

To encourage increased consumption of chicken meat in the domestic market, the UBABEF will conduct an institutional campaign, beginning with the broadcast of videos on social networks.
