EU to Lift Ban on Thai Poultry Meat Imports17 May 2012
EU - On 3 April 2012, the EU supported the European Commission's draft proposal to lift its ban on raw chicken imports from Thailand with effect from 1 July 2012.
The EU banned raw poultry meat from Thailand in 2004 after confirmation of H5N1, but continued to import cooked poultry meat products treated to a temperature of at least 70° C as they posed no risk for introduction of disease.
According to the USDA's latest International Egg and Poultry Review: EU to Lift Ban on Imports of Fresh Poultry Meat from ThailandInternational Egg and Poultry Review, other countries that lifted the ban on Thai chicken include Hong Kong, South Africa, Bahrain and Russia.
After the ban was imposed, Thailand's broiler meat exports to the EU went down from 98,231 tons in 2003 to zero in 2005. However, further processed broiler meat rose from 61,628 tons to 113,096 tons.
