Denmark Reports HPAI in Wild Duck
DENMARK - The Danish veterinary authorities have reported finding an H7 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in five wild mallard ducks, Anas platyrhynchos, in the west of the country.The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Friday, 18 January 2013. The outbreak was initially observed on 14 January and confirmed on 18 January.
Five of the wild ducks were reported as affected by the outbreak. No deaths were recorded and no birds were destroyed and/or slaughtered.
The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined.
According to the OIE's Animal Health Information Department, according to Chapter 10.4.1 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2012), the notification of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds does not change the disease free status of Denmark and must not affect trade of poultry and their products.
