The National Poultry Federation (FENAVI) said that Venezuela is Latin America's fourth major producer, preceded by Brazil (12.9 million tons), Mexico (2.8 million) and Argentina (1.7 million).

FENAVI executives pointed out that chicken consumption stood at an average of 41.3 kilograms per capita in 2012, and production has increased 134 per cent in 13 years.

Prensa Latina reports that in addition, egg production grew 82.2 per cent during the 1998-2012 period, and consumption stood at 188 eggs per capita.

The FENAVI recalled that Venezuela's egg production has met the domestic demand since 2007.

Last year, Venezuela began exporting powdered egg albumin to Russia and Japan.

The poultry sector generates 600,000 direct and indirect jobs and guarantees the work of 50,000 small companies and cooperatives that provide poultry services.
