Brazilian Chicken Exports to Middle East Down in January

27 February 2013

BRAZIL - Brazilian exports of chicken to the Middle East dropped 3.8 per cent in January this year as against the same month last year.

In the first month of 2013, Brazil shipped 106,000 tonnes of chicken to the region, which remained as the main destination for the product. The information was disclosed by the Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef).

Brazil-Arab News Agency reports that for chicken exports as a whole, Brazil sold 290,400 tonnes in January this year, 11.7 per cent less than in the first month of 2012. In revenues, there was 6.7 per cent reduction in the period, at US$592 million.

All other regions to which Brazil sells chicken presented reductions in imports of the Brazilian product in January this year as against January 2012. Last month, exports to Asia totalled 82,300 tonnes (-5.8 per cent), Africa bought 40,400 tonnes (-24 per cent) and the European Union 34,700 tonnes (-21 per cent).

"The level of exports in January this year was greater than the historic average for the period, only behind the first month in 2012, with a result considered atypical and above the average established last year. Anyway, it is interesting to notice that there are still reflexes of the crisis faced in the second half of last year, with lower levels of production,” commented Ubabef president, Francisco Turra.
