Mixture of Poultry and Red Meat in Sausages Banned

06 March 2013

TURKEY - The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry has banned using mixtures of poultry and red meat in sausages in an effort to harmonize legislation with the EU, which Turkey aspires to join.

The use of mixture of poultry and red meat in sausages was banned on 5 March, according to Today's Zaman. If ministry's inspectors detect products made from mixed meats, a total fine of TL 11,800 will be imposed on sellers.

The move is the final phase in the harmonization of the "Turkish Food Codex Meat and Products Regulation" with that of the EU.

Turkish Union of Dairy, Meat, and Food Producers (SETB?R) President Murat Yörük told reporters that they have been holding talks on the issue with the ministry, but the ministry has not given any information to the union about the products that will be taken off the shelves.

“Until yesterday [Monday], it was legally impossible for us to make products in line with the new legislation. We were asked to make products in line with the previous regulation. Companies have reduced the number of their products made from mixed meats but we cannot say that they have totally ended this practice. Now, the ministry says it will impose fines if it comes across products containing mixed meats on the shelves but it does not say what will happen to products made before Monday,” Mr Yörük said, adding that this regulation may lead to products worth TL 250,000 being wasted if they have to be thrown away.
