Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Western Australia

AUSTRALIA - The Australian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza at Henley Brook in Western Australia.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 8 March.

The outbreak was initially observed on 14 February and confirmed today (8 March).

One duck from a flock of backyard poultry (ducks and chickens) was found to be infected with low pathogenic avian influenza H5.

This was an incidental finding.

The 95 backyard birds were euthanased.

The source of the outbreak has not yet been determined.

Tracing and testing of contact birds is continuing.

A 1km Restricted Area has been established around the premises.

The N type is yet to be determined.

Several control measures have been applied to contain the situation.
