MAPA Launches Risk Management Program for Poultry Establishments16 April 2013
BRAZIL - On Saturday, 13 April, the Ministry of Livestock and Supply's (MAPA) Official Gazette (DOU) published the program standards for risk management with epidemiological surveillance and adoption of vaccines in poultry establishments considered more susceptible to the introduction and spread of diseases.
According to Normative Instruction No. 10, listed establishments, such as poultry establishments with laying hens in sheds like Californian, classic or modified, engaging in activities would require more rigorous health checks. Establishments that send birds to fairs and auctions and those intended for poultry stalls selling live animals would also require a more thorough check-up.
The system includes various samples for laboratory testing for the diagnosis of Salmonella. Sampling needs to be done by veterinarians from the official service or the sanitary control of poultry establishments should be performed under official supervision. Materials should be sent for laboratory diagnosis every four months.
In case of positive diagnoses for certain serotypes of Salmonella spp., the laboratory shall send the results immediately to the State Veterinary Service and the Federal Superintendent of Agriculture (SFA) of the state where the property is located.
