Chicken Sample in Guangdong Found to Contain H7N9 Virus

CHINA - The Chinese veterinary authorities have reported finding the low-pathogenic avian influenza A(H7N9) in one chicken sample at a market in Zengcheng in Guangdong province.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 9 on 21 May.

A chicken sample at Fuli market in Guangdong was found to be infected by the H7N9 virus.

According to the OIE, gene sequencing shows that it is low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAI). The intravenous pathogenicity index (IVPI) is 0.

The source of the outbreak(s) remains inconclusive.

The OIE, in conjunction with the Chinese veterinary authorities, have applied several measures to control the spread of the disease in the country.
