Revenue from Chicken Meat Exports Up in May

BRAZIL - The Brazilian Poultry Union (UBABEF) reports that exports of chicken meat reached US$766.4 million in May, a result close to the record $770 million in April this year - only 0.4 per cent lower - and 6 per cent higher compared to the same period last year. Volume decreased by 8.3 per cent between the months of May 2013 and 2012, with a total of 343,900 tons shipped this year.

Accumulated in 2013, export revenues also accumulates high of 6 per cent, totaling U.S. $ 3.46 billion between January and May this year. In volume terms, fell by 5.7 per cent, with 1.584 million tons exported.

According to the Executive Chairman of UBABEF, Francisco Turra, the pace of shipments in May growing. "The volume exported in May 2012, of 375 tons, a record for the sector and atypical for the time of year, which accentuated the rate of decline recorded in May of this year," he said.

However, as explained by the president of UBABEF, markets with long-term relationship with the Brazilian export sector showed reductions in import volumes, the example of Japan and Saudi Arabia. "It is an expected behavior after a long period with high levels of shipments to these markets, possibly with high inventories."

On the increase in revenue, the president of UBABEF highlights the increased exports of salted meat to the European Union. "We are in the period that ends the year-quota period (which defines the total volume that can be shipped to that market in 12 months), when shipments to Europe often have elevations" he says.

Exports als positively impacted export revenues despite the late production costs, arising from the crisis of 2012 inputs (with the sharp rise in the prices of corn and soybeans) and prices in international markets.

"The process of assimilation of higher costs in the international market was slow, but now we must endure the offsetting of accumulated losses by exporters in 2012," Mr Turra said.
