According to NewStraitsTimes, consumers said the chicken price, which increased from an average of RM5 per kg to between RM8 and RM9 per kg, was a burden to many households.

Many have complained that the price hike was a burden.

"The price had increased drastically. Before the price increase, it only cost me about RM5 per kg but now it costs RM8.

"This is a burden to consumers, particularly those with big families like me," said a buyer.

She hoped that the authorities would act fast as the upcoming festive season may rise the price of chicken further.

"I hope the authorities will come out with a practical solution to solve this price hike issue as soon as possible since Hari Raya is just around the corner," she said.

Another consumer said she had no choice but to absorb the price hike.

"My family prefers chicken instead of fish or beef during the fasting month, so I have no choice but to buy chicken," she said.

She said she hoped that the traders would not take advantage of the festive season by hiking the price further and urged the authorities to take immediate action.

State Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Dr Ku Rahman said the decision to bring in imported chicken falls under the Agricultural and Agro-based Ministry.

He said the state government would help to distribute the imported chicken through the relevant agencies once the ministry brought in the supply.

"We are still awaiting for the news from the ministry," he said.
