EU Considers Support for Cypriot Poultry Industry19 July 2013
CYPRUS - The recent outbreaks of Newcastle disease and possible support for the island's industry were discussed at the latest meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels on 15 July.
The Cyprus delegation briefed the Council on the consequences for the poultry sector of an outbreak of Newcastle disease on the island (12105/13).
The outbreak had a considerable impact on the island's entire poultry sector, which had to implement strict sanitary measures on the contaminated farms to eradicate the disease. It also affected consumer confidence in poultry products at a time when Cyprus was also facing an economic crisis.
The Commission detailed the two types of actions which could be envisaged in this case at EU level: firstly co-financed veterinary measures for the eradication of the disease and secondly support against disruption of the market. For the latter, Cyprus would have to submit precise economic data to the Commission.ThePoultrySite News Desk
