Antibiotic Residues Found in Half of Chicken Sampled in Ankara

TURKEY - Around 46 per cent of chicken and 58 per cent of beef samples from Ankara markets tested positive for the antibiotic group, quinolones.

A study published recently in Poultry Science shows that around half of the chicken and beef sold in Ankara contains residues of quinolone antibiotics.

Buket Er and colleagues at Gazi University in the city studied the levels of quinolone antibiotics in chicken and beef sold there.

A total of 127 chicken and 104 beef samples were collected randomly from local markets for analysis.

Extraction and determination of quinolones were made by ELISA procedure. One hundred eighteen of 231 (51.1 per cent) examined chicken meat and beef samples were found to contain quinolone antibiotic residue.

Among the chicken meat and beef samples, 58 (45.7 per cent) of chicken meat samples and 60 (57.7 per cent) of beef meat samples were positive for quinolones, respectively.

The mean levels (±SE) of quinolones were 30.81 ± 0.45µg per kg in chicken and 6.64 ± 1.11µg per kg in beef.
