Two Mexican States Lift Bird Flu Quarantine

23 September 2013

MEXICO – The poultry industry is now exploring rebuilding strategies after two states have had quarantine status lifted for H7N3 avian influenza.

Ministry health officials opted to free Aguascalientes and Tlaxcala of quarantine restrictions this week after several months of clear surveillance results.

Since the April/May period, both commercial units and backyard producers have been clear of positive birds. In all, over 638,000 holdings have been tested in National Health Service for Food Safety and Quality.

Progress has not come easily and animal health and industry leaders have praised producers and veterinarians for their vigilance in combatting the disease.

In the region of 350 million doses of vaccine has been issued to control the epidemic.

Now progress has been made, Jorge Cadena Romero, National Poultry Union President said the focus should now be on the future and developing export opportunity.

In order to do this, Enrique Sanchez Cruz of the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Farming says that meat quality and safety need to be advertised as intrinsic to Mexican poultry.

Work is continuing with the World Organisation for Animal Health to iron out the outbreak and make sure disease status is updated.
