According to Daily Independent, the call became imperative in view of the method of preservation of the products said to be unwholesome, as well as transportation through illegal routes and the danger such constitute to the nation’s economy.

The warning was dropped by the Comptroller of Customs in the Command, Richard Oteri, at the Arapaja dumping site in outskirts of Ibadan Oyo State where 5,390 seized cartons of poultry products were destroyed and buried.

Mr Oteri, who was represented by his deputy, Bumba Usman, at the site, told journalists that the contraband, which had a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N37,730,000 was seized by his personnel at Ilugun, old Eruwa Road in the state.

He explained that the seizure was made possible through intelligence reports, stressing that the suspects, who all ran away after encountering the NCS personnel to avoid arrest, came in eight small vehicles in which the cartons of the poultry products were loaded.

The NCS leader maintained that it was unfortunate that the smugglers had not desisted from engaging in the criminal act, thereby subjecting themselves to untold hardship occasioned by incurring losses whenever they were caught.

But, he insisted that his personnel would not relent in arresting them if they would not abandon the illicit trade and look for something legal and decent to do.

“It is our duty to rid the command in particular and Nigeria in general of smugglers. If they (smugglers) like, let them turn a new leaf, and if they like, let them continue in the illicit and illegal trade; we are never tired of giving them hot chase to ensure that they pay dearly for their criminal act,” Mr Oteri maintained.
