14 October 2013

SRI LANKA - Over 4200 house-wives in the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts have agreed to undergo training in poultry farming as a source of self-employment while attending to their normal domestic duties and responsibilities under the ‘Divineguma’ national development programme of the Ministry of Economic Development.

The ministry has made arrangements to provide these housewives with quality chicks, expertise and veterinary guidance free of charge.

A sum of 4.5 million rupees would be invested by the government for this purpose. With the help of veterinary surgeons in the provinces, 50 mobile service programmes too will be held at an electoral level to enlighten the prospective house-wives on how to work on the industry profitably.

The President of Kurunegala District Poultry Farmers’ Association R.M. Kumarasiri, told Sunday Observer that poultry farmers in Kurunegala District supply the highest number of eggs to the market for local consumption and the daily output of eggs in Kurunegala is around 4 million eggs.
