According to ABC, this follows Woolworth's recent decision to phase out the sale of caged eggs by 2018.

Ms MacLaren would only like production systems that stock a maximum of 2,500 hens per hectare to be able to market their eggs as free range.

“What we need to do is ensure that free range means free range.

"This is enough birds to ensure they can scratch around and practice their normal behaviours in order to stay healthy hens.

“That standard is set so all we’re doing is linking it with the labels that are in the supermarket.”
