Nigerian Poultry Farmers Promise Healthy Eggs

18 October 2013

NIGERIA - Members of the Lagos State Chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria have promised to recall any egg in the market that is found to be contaminated.

The President of the association in Lagos state, Agbojo Adedotun, made this known to journalists ahead of the recently celebrated World Egg Day in Agege.

According to Nigeria's Vanguard, Mr Adedotun, reacting to the issue of safety in egg consumption in the state, said there should be no fears as the eggs produce by the members are healthy.

He said one of the reasons for the celebration of the egg day is to draw attention to the benefit of consuming egg as over one billion people are currently underfed and undernourished in the world today.

“During the next 40 years, the population is expected to increase by another three billion people, how do we produce more from less?”

He said the world’s nutritional needs can be met with consumption of egg which is sustainable, affordable and highly nutritious.

Mr Adedotun noted that making high quality food available to the hungry is a priority for egg business around the world, “egg is a high quality source of animal protein.”

Speaking further on the benefits of egg consumption, he said egg protein quality is so high that scientists often use eggs as the standard by which the protein quality of other foods is measured. All the important amino acids, the building blocks of body protein, are found in an egg in the right proportions for your body’s needs.

“Any time of the day is right for eggs. You could start your morning with scrambled eggs stuffed into a pita pocket for a grab-and-run breakfast.”
