Pakistan Reports Drop in Chicken Prices

25 October 2013

PAKISTAN - The price of chicken has declined by Rs15 per kilogram in the retail market during the last four days to Rs215 per kilogram on Thursday (24 October) after demand for poultry dropped in the country, a spokesman for the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) said.

According to The News, Abdul Maroof Siddiqui, spokesman for the PPA, said that moreover, the rate of live chicken fell by Rs10 per kilogram to Rs130 per kilogram in the retail market in the abovementioned period.

“The demand for the chicken remained low, as people are still consuming meat and mutton of sacrificed animals,” he said.

The price of chicken may remain stable at and around the current level ahead of Muharram. “The wedding season remained off during the month of Muharram. The situation will keep the commodity price stable,” he said.

Moreover, the demand for the chicken may not further decline in the days to come, as people are likely to start consuming chicken very soon. And some of the faithful are also expecting to use chicken to serve religious rituals and gatherings.

With this latest decline, the price of slaughtered chicken has declined by Rs45 per kilogram in the last three weeks, while the price of live chicken has declined by Rs20 per kilogram during the period under review, he added.
