Chicken Producers Fined for Allegedly Misleading Claims

31 October 2013

AUSTRALIA - The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says a hefty fine for chicken meat companies should deter other producers from misleading consumers about how their products are grown and raised.

According to ABC, Baiada and Bartter, which supply Steggles chicken products, were allegedly found guilty in the Federal Court earlier this year of misleadingly using the term 'free to roam.'

ACCC commissioner Sarah Court said a $400,000 fine, imposed this week, shows courts take misleading claims in advertising and on packaging seriously.

"We think this is a very serious issue, both for consumers, but also for other players in the industry, for their competitors, who are doing the right thing and are making truthful claims and consumers must be able to compare," Ms Court said.

"We think this does send a strong message out to the industry."
