German Flock Tests Positive for Low-pathogenic Avian Flu

GERMANY - A small mixed flock of laying hens and ostriches has tested positive for the H5N3 low-pathogenic avian influenza virus in the southern state of Baden-Wurttemberg.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 3 December to the World Organisation from Animal Health (OIE).

Twenty birds out of a flock of 130 in Riedöschingen in Baden-Wurttemberg tested positive for the H5N3 avian flu virus; 28 of the birds have been destroyed.

The report adds that the laying hens were culled and safely disposed of on 3 December 2013; ostriches will be culled until the end of 49th week; cleansing and disinfection of the premises will follow.

No poultry have been moved to other regions in Germany, Member States or third countries.
