Taiwanese Ducks Infected with Low-pathogenic Avian Flu

04 December 2013

TAIWAN - Routine surveillance has revealed a duck flock in the east of the country to be infected with the H5N3 low-pathogenic subtype of the avian influenza virus.

The veterinary authority sent Follow-up Report No.1 dated 3 December to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

Twenty ducks from a flock of 10,000 birds in Yuli Township in Hualien County were found to have a sub-clinical infection with the H5N3 subtype of the virus on 4 November.

According to the report, during the third round surveillance conducted on the poultry farms around the first H5N3 infected duck farm detected in Hualien County in August 2013, another H5N3 avian influenza virus was isolated from swabs taken from a meat-type duck farm on 18 November 2013.

Movement restrictions were initiated. The result of clinical investigation showed that the ducks were in healthy condition without clinical signs and abnormal mortality. The national laboratory confirmed this H5N3 outbreak as LPAI by virological tests and pathogenicity test (done by lethal rate of susceptible chickens) on 3 December 2013.
