SRI LANKA - Even though the 2014 Budget includes a proposal to introduce a new pricing formula to replace the heavy burden of price control on poultry, farmers are not very optimistic.

Ceylon Today reports that poultry producers in the country saw a similar situation in 2013 when the government proposed a pricing formula based on the cost structure; but it was not followed up due to the complexity of the formula and the involvement of other sectors.

When Ceylon FT asked whether the pricing formulae proposed in the 2013 and 2014 budgets would complicate matters, Bairaha Farms PLC Managing Director, Yakooth Naleem said the industry would have preferred if the government had taken measures to control supplies instead of imposing price controls.

"The industry would have preferred if the authorities had resorted to protecting the consumers by controlling the supplies, this would be more transparent and easy to implement and would give the industry faster relief," Mr Naleem said.
