Four Bird Flu Outbreaks Reported in Vietnamese Province

VIET NAM - The Vietnamese veterinary authorities have reported four outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in various regions of Bac Ninh province, which is in the north of the country.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 3 last week (10 January 2014) stating that the causal agent was identified as HPAI virus, serotype H5N1.

According to the report, a total of 9787 birds were found susceptible, out of which 3895 cases were reported. A total of 2600 deaths were discovered, and the remaining 7187 birds were destroyed.

Several control measures such as stamping out, movement control inside the country, vaccination in response to the outbreak(s) and disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s) have been applied to control the situation. There has been no treatment of affected birds.

The source of the outbreak(s) remains inconclusive.
