Sri Lanka Soon to be Self-sufficient in Eggs
SRI LANKA - There will be no need to import eggs after next year as Sri Lanka will be self-sufficient in eggs under the national development program of Divineguma, former Divisional Secretary for Bingiriya, W.E. Jayathilaka told Samurdhi officers of the Kurunegala district.

According to Sri Lanka's Daily News, addressing the officers at a meeting held at Bingiriya recently, Mr Jayathilaka said arrangements have been made to make Sri Lanka self sufficient in eggs.
"Under the livestock development programme, the Economic Development Ministry has distributed 1.1 million quality chicks among low income families.
Another 600,000 chicks are to be distributed among low income families islandwide shortly," Mr Jayathilaka said.
Rs. 300 million has been invested by the government for this project. Free expertise and veterinary services are provided to those who are engaged in poultry farming, he said.
"About 12,000 families are engaged in this project. Poultry farmers in both Kurunegala and Nuwara Eliya districts are very successful in this regard," Mr Jayathilaka said.
