Dominican Poultry Industry Eyes up Export Resumption

11 February 2014

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – The country’s first farms will soon be certified to resume poultry exports to Haiti, say Ministry of Agriculture officials.

Egg and chicken products could be shipped to Haiti within 60 days and farmers are also eyeing up doubled sales through formalised trade with Hispaniola, reports Dominica Today.

Livestock director Bolivar Toribio noted that, although some 100 major farms can export to Haiti, they need to review their long term modification process.

"That is a process that takes time, because if you go to a farm that has no bathrooms for employees, they have to build them, together with a septic and a drain field," said Mr Toribio.

He said International organizations approve the standards which govern the certification process, which in his view will benefit the country’s poultry production that will have the quality needed to enter any global market.
