The contest encouraged cooks who care about good food and where it comes from to make a short recipe video using ingredients with the Freedom Food higher welfare label and Fairtrade Foundation labels. The judges were also looking for simple, accessible recipes and ingredients as well as flair, personality and charisma from the presenters.

The winner was London-based Kate Holderness with her recipe for ‘Chilli Con Sausage’. The judges said Kate’s recipe was a good twist on an everyday, achievable dish. She was also entertaining, and clearly explained the importance of buying Freedom Food and Fairtrade products. Kate receives a year’s free grocery shopping from The Co-operative Food – worth £4,000.

TV chef and Compassionate Cook judge Paul Merrett said: “She’s fantastic – give this girl her own show! I loved the deadpan delivery and her sense of humour is fabulous – she’s a telly natural!”

In second and third place were Henry Anderson from Suffolk - who demonstrated how to make ‘Peri Peri Spatchcock Chicken’ - and in third place, 11-year-old Hector Hewson from Somerset who submitted a recipe for ‘Hector’s Scrumptious Chocolate Brownies’. Both runners up will receive £500-worth of shopping from The Co-operative Food.

Liam Kurzeja, speaking for Freedom Food, said: “The contest, which was launched for the first time last year, is designed to encourage people to think about where their food comes from when they shop. It caused quite a stir on social media with the contest page receiving 18,423 visits, 12,095 views for the videos and attracting 6,000 pubic votes. We are looking forward to running the second contest later this year.”
