Arvance Ranch Recognised for Environmental Excellence20 February 2014
US - Arvance Ranch in Kerman, California, was one of six farms across the United States to receive US Poultry & Egg Association’s Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award during the International Poultry Expo, part of the 2014 International Production & Processing Expo, in Atlanta.
Arvance Ranch is owned by Bill and Persia Arvance and managed by their sons, Brad and John.
The farm is comprised of 93 acres in which turkeys are raised on behalf of Foster Farms. Arvance Ranch has 12 poultry houses with a total capacity of 100,000 birds per flock. The farm also dedicates 50 acres to producing almonds.
Arvance Ranch uses a nutrient management plan for litter management with 100 percent of the ranch’s litter sold to a second party, who recycles the litter and markets it as organic fertiliser on a year around basis. The ranch utilises rendering as its mortality system, with disposal trucks picking up the contents on a regular basis.
With an appreciation for wildlife conservation, the Arvances have installed owl boxes in the almond orchard and maintain natural grass and clover cover on their property to benefit wildlife. They also plant trees for resident birds to take refuge and constructed a habitat for wild fowl to use during their yearly migration.
Elton Maddox, 2014 USPoultry chairman and president and CEO of Wayne Farms, Oakwood, Georgia, presented the award to the Arvance family.
US Poultry & Egg Association (USPoultry) sponsors the annual awards in recognition of exemplary environmental stewardship by family farmers engaged in poultry and egg production.
Applicants were rated in several categories, including dry litter or liquid manure management, nutrient management planning, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques, and participation in education or outreach programmes. Applications were reviewed and farm visits conducted by a team of environment al professionals from universities, regulatory agencies, and state trade associations in selecting national winners in six regions.
