H5N1 Bird Flu Outbreak Affects Commercial Layers in Nepal

NEPAL - The Nepali veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 bird flu at a Kosh-based commercial layer farm in production stage kept in deep litter system.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on Tuesday, 26 February. The outbreak was initially observed on 13 February and on 18 February, a real-time PCR test was carried out at the Central Veterinary Laboratory, confirming the presence of the HPAI virus.

A total of 2000 birds were found susceptible, out of which 570 cases were reported. The remaining 1430 birds were destroyed.

According to the report, the birds showed depression, decreased egg production followed by death with cyanosis, respiratory distress and paralysis.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
