Over 40,000 Chickens Destroyed on Dutch Farm Due to Low-path Bird Flu

03 March 2014

NETHERLANDS - The Dutch veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of H5N1 low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) at a poultry farm in the province of Flevoland.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification last week (28 February). According to the report, the outbreak was initially suspected on 26 February and confirmed on 27 February after a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test confirmed the presence of the LPAI H5N1 virus.

A total of 40,327 chickens were present; all have been destroyed.

According to the OIE, on 27 February, a 1-km protection zone was established. In this one-km zone there is one other premise. All susceptible animals on the infected premise have been killed.

Several control measures have been put in place in order to contain the situation.
