AMI Highlights Nutrition Benefits of Eating Meat

US - American Meat Institute (AMI) has urged the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to focus on the important benefits of meat and poultry in the human diet, adding that sustainability is outside the Committee's scope.

Meat and poultry products are important and rich sources of highly bioavailable micronutrients and inclusion of meat and poultry products in the diet can prevent well-documented vitamin deficiencies, according to comments AMI submitted to the 2015 US Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

The committee requested comments on sodium reduction and food safety as well as sustainability, an issue that AMI said is clearly outside the committee’s charge and beyond its expertise.
