Danish Salmonella Infections Fewer Than Ever20 June 2014
DENMARK – Danish broiler meat has been free from any salmonella cases for three years in a row.
The number of Danes recorded with Salmonella infections in 2013 dropped to historic lows last year as more than half of Danish infections occurred abroad, reports News Medical.
According to an annual report, 1,136 infections were contracted in Denmark, the lowest number since efforts were started to combat Salmonella in the 1990s.
Travel to Turkey has resulted in almost a third (31 per cent) of infections above Thailand, 13 per cent, and Egypt, 8 per cent.
"Denmark has been a pioneer when it comes to combatting Salmonella in broiler meat and eggs,” said National Food Institute senior academic offer Birgitte Helwigh.
“When we look at the figures from the last three years, it is quite evident that the joint efforts of producers, authorities and researchers to make Danish broiler meat Salmonella-free have paid off."
