Business Community Flags Nigeria for Broiler Opportunity

20 June 2014

NIGERIA – Entrepreneurs are being encouraged to look at Nigerian poultry farming as a recipe for fast profits in a dynamic market.

Economic and geographical factors have prompted business commentators to urge investors to look at intensive eight week broiler production in Nigeria.

Business Day has advised that a lack of domestic food security and readiness of land for development mean broiler production is ‘highly profitable’.

Nigeria produces less than 50 per cent of its food, and with established market opportunities with Niger, Chad and Northern Cameroon, the publication said ‘whatever is produced will definitely get a market, even at a good price’.

The domestic agrifoods and arable sector produce was highlighted as producing ample raw foods to support intensive poultry rearing.

Maize, ground nut cake, soya cake, palm kernel cake, wheat offal, rice bran and oyster shells were all cited as locally produced goods to be sourced ‘conveniently’.

The report addressed fears of bird mortality by explaining the merits of vaccines and livestock insurance.
