Danisco Animal Nutrition 'Thinks Outside the Gut' on Probiotic Benefits

HUNGARY - Dr Ajay Awati, Development Lead at Danisco Animal Nutrition, a subsidiary of DuPont Industrial Biosciences, will present a lecture on the topic ‘Think outside the gut! The Effects of probiotics on animal performance and environment’ at the International Scientific Conference on Probiotics and Prebiotics (IPP) in Budapest on 24 June at 13:30.

Dr Awati, a qualified vet and doctor of Animal Sciences, with over 10 years experience in the feed industry and an extensive back catalogue of peer reviewed publications, will discuss the success that has been achieved in the last few decades through use of feed additives in monogastric production, including dramatically improved feed conversion and growth rates. He will also address the challenges that the animal production industry is facing including:

  • producing more protein to higher consumer standards
  • ensuring healthy animal development in an increasingly time-pressured production environment
  • reducing dependence on antibiotics (or preparing for legislation that will call for a reduction in future)
  • addressing environmental concerns and dealing with legislation on, for example, ammonia emissions.

Dr Awati will argue that most, if not all, of the above mentioned challenges can be met by supporting the development of healthy gastrointestinal micro-biota. He will reveal newly published research that points to the vital role that feed additives such as probiotics will play in helping producers achieve current and future commercial success in spite of these challenges.

Dr Awati commented: “Since the 1960s, broiler body weight at 42 days has increased by 66 per cent and feed conversion has improved by 32 per cent. My presentation will not only admire the achievements to date of the industry, but also discuss the challenges it will go through in the future to keep that productivity sustainable.

"With the modern-day complexity of animal production and animal nutrition, it’s about ensuring that producers can maximise the supply of high quality protein, without negatively impacting their bottom line and ensuring the sustainability of animal production systems and food security for years to come.”
