Pakistan Poultry Industry Addresses High Prices in Ramadan

01 July 2014

PAKISTAN - The Chairman of the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) has announced the formation of a committee to control poultry prices in Ramazan.

Chairman of the PPA, Dr Hassan Sarosh has said that the recent hike in poultry products prices is temporary and that his organisation has formed a committee to subsidise the cost of chicken to consumers, reports Business Recorder of Pakistan.

The prices of poultry products has increased in the twin cities and the price of live chicken in the retail market has reached PKR170 per killo.

Talking to APP, Dr Hassan said the poultry industry suffered a lot during last one and half year due to over-production and the farmers were facing a loss.

He said that due to this reason, most of the farmers closed down their poultry farms resulting in shortage of the product. He added that due to the reduced supply and higher demand, prices went up.

The PPA Chairman said as the farmers are again coming back to the industry, the production will increase and problem of demand and supply would be resolved so the prices would again come to within the normal range.

Secretary General of the PPA, Dr Bashir Mahmood, confirmed that because of the bad market situation, poultry chickens prices increased in the capital city and demand and supply problem is also causing high prices.

He said that current energy crises in the country had also hit production and that increased feed and medication costs had caused chicken rates to rise in the last couple of years.

Business Recorder adds that, according to Dr Mahmood, these matters will be resolved by consultation with all the stakeholders and "We would consult with the government in this regard."
