Aviagen Guide Focuses on Carcass Condemnation, Downgrade Management

GLOBAL - Aviagen® has released the latest in its hugely popular ‘Pocket Guide’ series, this time focussing on carcass condemnation and downgrade management.

Available for the Arbor Acres®, Indian River® and Ross® brands, the new pocket guide is a practical and visual tool aimed at helping both broiler farmers and processors identify carcass condemnation and downgrade issues.

The guide makes strong use of pictures to highlight problems that are often only apparent during processing. These include everything from footpad dermatitis to poor de-feathering.

The guides use a simple checklist system to point out common causes of issues and suggested solutions, providing information and guidance on how to improve management practices both at the farm and the processing plant to help promote carcass quality.

Nick French, Global Head of Technical Transfer said: "As always, many problems can be avoided by maintaining strong biosecurity and high welfare practises, but good stockmanship has a really important part to play too. For footpad dermatitis, managing wet litter is really important and correct maintenance and adjustment of automated catchers helps ensure that birds don’t damage wings or other bones after all the effort has been placed into growing a healthy, hearty chicken.

"Supplying the consumer meat of the highest quality is the goal for the whole chicken industry. Carcass condemns in the processing plant are both a significant cost to the producer and an important product quality issue.

The new Carcass Condemns pocket guide from Aviagen is a tool to help both the broiler producer and processing plant management to reduce the incidence of carcass condemns and improve profitability and product quality."

The guides are now available for download from the Aviagen website and are expected to become a vital resource for broiler breeders and processors alike.
