New Straits Times Online reports Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said this was to ensure quality halal chicken for consumers.

He said there were also plans to upgrade the area around the market for recreational activities.

A lake is located some 200m from the market.

City Hall plans to carry out landscaping and build a jogging track and a playground.

“I believe we can make it a tourist attraction and promote it under one of the tourism packages,” he said, after opening a workshop on the Transformation of Wholesale Agricultural Produce at Taman Koperasi Polis Fasa 2, Batu Muda, here.

He said the workshop was one of the efforts to ensure that the sale of agricultural products is well-organised and systematic.

Wholesalers were given information on grading, packaging and labelling.

“According to the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority, 70 per cent of the food in the country is sold at wholesale markets,” added Mr Phesal.

“Thus, we need to make sure that the wholesale markets are in an excellent condition.

“City Hall plans to upgrade existing wholesale markets.”

He said there were also plans to fence up the markets and require workers to carry employee cards.

“With the new system, I hope the markets will operate in a more systematic way and illegal traders can be prevented from selling produce outside the markets,” he said.

He said there was also a plan to build a complex next to the Pasar Borong Kuala Lumpur which would offer freshwater fish, vegetables and fruits.
