Up to £10 million could be invested into a former cheese packing factory near Wrexham - says the chicken processing company that has bought the site, reports Daily Post.

The newspaper revealed earlier this week that Maelor Poultry Ltd will create 150 jobs if its proposals to develop a state-of-the-art food processing plant are successful.

The company now says it will be working closely with Wrexham Council on the proposals for the former First Milk site at Marchwiel, which closed in March with the loss of more than 200 jobs.

A spokesman for Maelor Poultry said: “We anticipate an initial investment of up to £10 million on this site, to create a leading edge production facility.

“We have been seeking a suitable site for this facility for some time and are excited at the prospect of the Maelor Creamery which has had a long history of highly productive food processing.

“The geographical location lends itself to such a facility because of the proximity of numerous poultry farmers and a local hatchery. There will be investment in modernising the site, and developing a state-of-the-art processing plant.

“And of course, this area has a wealth of experienced food industry workers, who we hope will embrace the opportunity to be part of the next phase in this well-known site’s story.

“We will continue to work closely with planners at Wrexham Council on our innovative proposals for the development, which will not only meet the most stringent food safety and environmental guidelines but also give the regional economy in Wrexham a welcome boost.

“It is expected there will be indirect job creation as a result of the investment, thanks to supply chain opportunities both in the Welsh border area, and into Shropshire and Cheshire.”

The site has been operational for more than 60 years, most of those as a food or dairy processing facility, according to Daily Post. The plans demonstrate how Maelor Poultry intend to redevelop in accordance with sustainability principles at both local and national levels, using existing buildings and facilities to accommodate a modern, efficient poultry processing plant.
