Outbreaks of Bird Flu in Germany Confirmed

10 December 2014

GERMANY - Highly pathogenic avian influenza, H5N8, has been detected in poultry and wild duck in two previously reported isolated outbreaks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

There are no new outbreaks in this report from the German veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) dated 9 December.

All poultry on affected farms have been culled and safely disposed of.

Cleaning and disinfection have been completed on 10 November 2014.

All samples taken from poultry of holdings in the restricted zones and contact holdings have been investigated with negative results for avian influenza virus.

The active monitoring of wild birds showed negative results for avian influenza virus with the exception of a clinically healthy wild duck shot on 17 November 2014 on the Isle of Rügen (approximately 100km distance to the affected location); the same virus type as the affected poultry has been confirmed.
